You heard of the Sears Robuck catalogue?

It used to have a hole punched in the top lefthand corner to hang on a nail in outhouses back in the 19th century. People would use the pages of it. Watch for paper cuts!

Paper from magazines and newspapers. Both have been around a lot longer than toilet tissue.

Back in those days they used leave, little stones, old clothes, they would cut little pieces and take them with them when they had to go to the rest room.

They used their left hand. That's why they used to force people to be right-handed. It was considered dirty to use your left hand for eating, touching, etc. Still is in the Middle East.

Sometimes they used their hands. Sometimes they used leaves. Sometimes they used a rag/sponge on a stick which they washed between uses.
