Went to Rome last January with my wife. we stayed for a week and it was beautiful. It only rained once for about an hour or two. The weather was sunny and nice. In the day we wore a sweater or light jacket but tended to get warm with all the walking around we did. In the nihgts it got colder so my wife wore gloves. There was hardly any crowds anywhere except the Vatican. Even that line moved quickly. I highly recommend Rome in January because it is less crowded, much cheaper, and if you get out early enough you can have the Forum almost to yourself.

I'm from Rome! January is one of the coldest month in Rome but don't scare not such as the north of Europe! temperature never goes down to zero or -5° and generally it never snows (I'm 27 years old and last time I can remeber the snow in Rome I was 10!). u need anyway warm cloths because of the humid that also in winter is very strong! Between December and January there r the most beautiful sunny days.... blue sky and freeze air! my favourite winter time!
have a great time!

You have to realise that , at last it is winter time and Rome is also cold as the other European cities. But it is warmer then Prague, Budapest etc. I didn't see Rome yet but, I work in a tourism agency and you may feel sure that Rome is a dream city, I didnt meet anyone who didnt like there.
So many people wants to visit often. Wear warm clothes and enjoy your stay..:)

might well be a good time to go even if it is cold, I went in May & there were so many people everywhere, no tables available for drinks/food etc, huge queues/lines for every major tourist attraction, every public historical site/building so crowded with people you really couldn't take a decent photo, I can't imagine how much worse it gets in June or July. I wish I had visited out of season as it is a fantastic & beautiful city, I just wished there were less people ....

About the same as London. Yes it's cold but then again it is expected to be in January.
