There are 101 official members. However, the number of players on stage for any given piece may be greater or less than that. The BSO, like any major orchestra, has some people designated not as permanent members but as "substitutes" or "reserve" players that it calls on as it needs, paying per service with no obligation for additional concerts (regular members are usually paid for a minimum number of concerts a year).
