Piercing the egg with a pin will help prevent it cracking when it goes in the water.

Bring a pan of water to the boil ( a gentle simmer, rather than furious bubbles) and put the eggs in carefully for 3 or 4 mins depending on the size.

Aah, you primitive people. I have an egg piercer, which only goes less than 1cm into the bottom of the egg-the round end, of course. it only goes into the air sac at the bottom of the shell, so the egg white doesn't leak out. You get them from cook shops. Or, as other people have said, use eggs at room temperature, not straight from the fridge into boiling water. Good lord, I wouldn't fancy trying to stick a pin into an egg first thing in the morning. Night night x

hmm... seems to me that it would allow the egg to leak out, and then it will become more like a "poached" egg.

i just put the egg in some warm water while waiting for a pot of water to boil.... (it cracks less if it is at room temperature).... then boil for 8 minutes, turn off gas but leave egg in for 2 minutes. then wash w/ cold water, drain, and peel! enjoy~

You CAN pierce it w/ a pin. But pierce the more angular end of the egg, not the round end. Boil the water GENTLY before putting in eggs. cheers! :)

Soft boiled eggs... SIMMERING not boiling water, I don't bother pricking eggs, just use them from room temp and put carefully into water for about 3 1/2 mins, depends how soft you want them.
