This answer depends on the breed of chicken. Some can, particularly wild breeds.
Most domesticated chickens cannot fly at least not very far or very well. The reason is their body's weigh to much for their wings to support flight.
As Alice Cooper found out back in 1968 when someone threw a chicken onstage and he being from Detroit threw it back into the audience. The chicken sort of fell into the crowd and did not live much longer. (Who brings a chicken to a rock concert anyways?)

yes chickens can fly, the only reason most cant fly very well is because they have their flight feathers trimmed plus most chickens are lazy!

Yes they can fly over short distances. The world record is approximately 330m. The problem they have is that man has bred them to be too heavy for their wings. Therefore this limits the ammount of lift that they can acheive.

Not really. One way to know what birds fly or don't fly is to look at their breast meat. The ones that fly and excercise those muscles (ducks, geese, etc.) have dark breast meat. Those that don't have white meat (chickens and turkeys).

They surely can which is why we used to have to cut back the feathers on their wings when we kept them years ago. They can fly well enough to escape otherwise.

nope. but they can use their wings to fall softer than we can. when i was a kid i threw my adult rooster in the air to find out. he landed roughly and had a twisted right foot all his life.
he pecked the he** out of me on sight for the rest of his life, and my mom used to make me collect the eggs from the chickens every day as my punishment.
rough business.
