Yes,this can happen .Not so often but,it can.

I'm living in Caribbean and teaching diving, here. personally,I saw,(in more than 14 years) , at least 7-8 sting rays jumping out the water. They where,at most "White Spotted Eagle Rays"(Aetobatus narinari).
They do this when predators are chasing them ,or when they, are chasing other fish.

If a sting ray lies on the sand,in shallow waters, and a boat pass over her ,she can feel threatened and swimming powerfully away from the "intruder" ,may be,jumping out of water too.
In the case of the accident reported in Florida , the fish fell in the boat while jumping out the water.(Maybe, while escaping, scared from the boat).
This is my idea about what happened.

Usually ,they are very shy fish, that are trying to avoid us in all the ways.
They can sting for defense.
Note : they can have more than one stinger,at the base of their tail.

You might never have heard about the more recent event (though much more unusual since this animal had to go out of it's way) if the media wasn't sensitized to Stingrays and barbs in the heart by the Irwin situation. Now if it happens again today.... I'll start hearing Twilight Zone music.

I thought that only men and elephants wanted to kill men. Maybe the stingrays , too , now.

Our planet is due for a magnetic polar flip ,, and may it drive the animals like that used by Japan and China to fortell an impending catastrophe? Things are getting wierd , rightfully.

They are upset about the bad rap they are getting in the news, plus idiots in Australia are killing them in revenge for the accidental death of Jeff Corwin (is that his name?). Before this they were just gentle creatures doing their thing on the ocean bottom. Now they're flopping into boats and attacking people. Can you blame them? Next thing you know trees will be falling across the roads killing people.

----------------BEWARE BONY BRETHREN!-------------------

These are the first stages in an all-out invasion. The cartilaginous animals are sick and tired of the bony animals running things. A few years back it was the sharks. This year it is the rays. Soon....it will be the skates.
