It seems obvious, but keep it in the crisper of your fridge. Make sure it's wrapped properly and your fridge is cold enough.

I got a new refridgerator with humidity control. It is great. I can keep a head of lettuce very nicely for about two weeks.
If you can't get a new fridge, then try those live lettuce containers they sell at the supermarket. They come in a plastic container that has water chambers for the roots. Just pull a fresh leaf off when you need one.

in addition to some of the other tips, never cut lettuce with a metal knife. It will make it brown faster. You can buy a special knife for cutting lettuce. Its made of a hard plastic.

Yes it always goes bad. To keep it fresh longer put paper towels in the bag once opened.

Replace the wrapping each time you use the lettuce and make sure you wrap it tight (use Saran Wrap). Keep it in the crisper drawer (or veggie) drawer in your fridge.

What I've done to extend the life of bagged salad is crumple up a couple sheets of paper towels (dry) and put them in the bag. They absorb the moisture.
