Is it true that the German Airforce in WW2 would avoid if possible avoid using the Nazi salute and use the normaly recognised military salute and if so why.

Yes it is true. Only those in the highest levels used the Nazi salute and those forced to because of who they were around. They did not use it amoungst themselves. The Air force didn`t like the Nazi`s, especially the SS. They were patriots to Germany not the Nazi`s. The German Airforce saved many Americans by wresting the POW pilots from the SS and putting them in their own camps where they were treated well.

This was true of the army and navy as well but after the attempt on Hitler's life in July 1944 everyone was required to give the Nazi salute.

There was a lot of germans who fought for their country in ww2 (who had no choice) who hated the nazis. The most notable was Rommel who was commander of the arfika corps. He was a brilliant general who was respected by both the germans and allies alike. But he was wermacht and despised the nazis. The nazis later hanged him.

false.Hermann goering was the reichsmarshal of the air force and Hitlers # 1 man.A total Nazi.But many aviators and ground crew were not Nazis and would stick to military protocol as many other military branches did.Not everyone agreed with Hitlers policies
