I've gotten thumbs down for simply stating my religion. It is not used like it was intended.
Watch how many I get for this answer.
LOL!!!

I used to get offended when someone asked for an atheists opinion, then gave all the atheists who answered a thumbs-down. I felt as if I had been baited right along with the others. These are also the same questions that award a Best Answer to the Christian response.
I no longer let these bother me, because I have learned that the people asking the question had only intended to mock the atheists anyway. Unfortunately, you cannot always tell which questions fit this category. Some of the most seemingly sincere questioners are guilty of this.

No, I am never surprised because I know that my answer will always upset someone or they will disagree.
I was not even surprised when someone asked a question about my former belief that I knew I was the only one that could give a answer because I am the only one on this board with experience there, and the other answers backed that fact up. Anyway i answered and he emailed me privately and I educated him on that movement, but his last email he accused me of not being pagan at and and accused me of still being a Christian and he admitted that I was the only one who answered with correct information, but because I claimed I was now pagan and not Christian he refused to give me best answer although he admitted it was.
I was not surprised because Christians feel they have the truth and all others are lost and if you dare to leave they will persecute anyway they can. This was his way of persecuting me, but I don't take a lot of pride in best answer. After all the numbers really do not mean anything and there is no prize. I answer because if I have the answer I think will help, I am more tan happy to help.

The only thumbs-downs that ever surprise me are the ones where I have stated a fact--like a verifiable definition--and people have "disagreed." But as for opinions and interpretations of things and statements of faith--those types of thumbs-downs don't come as a surprise, even if what I have said appears to be "mild," as you say.

Nothing surprises me here anymore. I've seen factually correct answers get thumbed down and I've seen the most moronic questions or answers thumbed up. For the record, I thumb up anyone that even attempts to give a good answer.

I thumbs down 9 out of 10 of the folks that love to scream in CAPS for the whole post, regardless of the content.

Same here. I will think I am being neutral and get a barrage of thumbs down. And then I will write something obnoxious and get a lot of thumbs up. Go figure.

I pay no real attention to it. I have many unpopular views. I'm openly nihilistic but deeply optimistic, I've had intensely powerful spiritual encounters with Fenrir wolf of norse mythology but I'm an atheist, I believe life has no real meaning but the meaning in my life is knowledge, I don't believe in magic but I'm a chaos mage, etc. I'm gay (that's enough to get thumbs down from lots of christians, regardless of the validity of my answer).
It's inevitable that I'm going to torque some people off. Feh. scr*w 'em. I'm here to have fun and think. If they don't like it, tough.

I've noticed if an answer is based on intelligence it'll get alot of thumbs down, but a dumb answer gets alot of thumbs up.
This scares me because it shows me the intellectual level of the general population, I know education is bad now but I think it's worse than most people know.

Not sure what thumbs up and down mean but a guess up is good? Down is bad?
When I put up a question they don't understand what I am saying so I kind of quit. Had a bunch of violations. Didn't know it was bad.

i do get surprised by some of the thumbs down i get
especially when it is concerning comforting someone
and because i put in that i am spiritualist , i get thumbs down
i cant understand why anyone would feel the need to do that to someone who is only wishing the best for someone
however .. i usually do laugh it off
