It's fun. My adult cats still flip out if I throw a ball of paper on the floor, they tear it up and play with it for hours.

They even make cat toys to simulate this sounds/experience, my cats go nuts for them too. (Crinkle balls)

Because cats are just mad that way. :P Try to keep the paper away from it, and give it proper cat toys. Also set aside plenty of playtime for you and kitty. Kittens need extra attention.

I read somewhere once that crinked up paper and plastic actually sounds the same to cats as they prey they catch. A mouse running around sounds alot clearer to cats than to us humans and the noises that the paper or plastic create mimic that sound.
Plus, don't we all agree it's fun to make a mess that we don't have to clean up??!!

She needs toys to tear up...
I found with my kitties that they all like the sound that the paper makes when it's tearing. They like plastic too, so be careful to keep it away from them.

Probably needs a scratching post. It's like a baby teething.

Because
1) It's fun.
2) It feels good.
3) It's what they do.

It crinkles, it moves when jumped on, you can hide under it, you can carry it around, it doesn't bite back, they can pretend they are shredding their prey and it is fun to bat around like a soccer ball.
