I think that people are blowing this out of proportion. It's not a permanant altering to her, I don't think she'll appreciate herself less. She wants curly hair! It's not like she wants a different nose or thinks she's fat and curly hair will fix it.

I think that if she wants it done, there isn't any harm in it. I know that most African American folks that I know "perm" (chemically straighten) their childrens hair as young as six years old. Its just chemicals. The nine year old in question right now, look at her hair texture, and get it done professionally. Make sure they do a strand test first to make sure the chemicals aren't too strong for her hair. And be sure to tell her that it's going to stay curly for however long perms last (usually 4-8 weeks) so if she doesn't like it, she's going to have to deal with it until it grows out or the chemicals wear out.

I think that we try to make our children out for being a lot more naive to things that they actually are. I think that it's just hair and it will give the kid a sense of control for herself... since she is making her own decisions on her hair. I mean, she's the one who's going to have to wear it.

i feel that you should base your decision off of what you know about perms and where if it could possibly damage your child's hair. I would also include your nine year old in the process because she is the one living with the hair not you so ask her first to see how she feels but also remember to tell her about the pros and cons of getting her hair permed.

It's cruel to put a nine year old through that. Plus my mother did it to my sister when she was little and to this day she still hates every picture from that time frame. Plus a perm is allot to take care of. You have to worry about frizzing and damage to the hair, worrying about using special shampoos that are not tear resistant. No nine year old should have to worry about her hair that much. It's tough enough these days making yourself be presentable and beautiful, let her enjoy her childhood.

That's kind of funny you mention that, because my 31 year old &I were "just" talking about when we took her to a sallon to have "hers" permed at the age of 10. She had beautiful, long, untouched, healthy hair, and the perm "fried" her hair! I
almost hit the roof, and she cried for a week! Hair on a 10 year old is still very "innocent" so to speak, and If I had known what would happen from perming it, NEVER! But it's up to you. You'll end up buying a bunch of products that "claim" to keep it soft, but you'll find out all it does is
cover up the damage. Good luck with "that" decision.

I don't see a problem with it if it's a one time thing, I think my mom let me perm my hair when I was about that age, she was doing it and I wanted to do it too so we got mother-daughter perms (that's back when perms were still the "in" thing). I don't think there's anything wrong with letting her experiment one time, let her do it once to get it out of her system, hopefully she'll hate it because it won't turn out like she wants it and she'll never do it again (that's what happened when I did it, I thought that my hair would have really cool ringlet curls and it didn't, it was more of a wave......still want those ringlets, I will never do another perm though).

Yes, if the 9 year old really wanted the perm.

I think my first perm was at about 9 or 10. It was the 80's. I learned a valuable lesson by that perm (i.e. - don't perm my hair!) and didn't have to figure it out in HS instead.

yes you can. I have a friend who permed her 5 year olds hair. it didn't do anything wrong. and it permed really pretty

but to take her to a salon because kids hair perms differently than adults and it is tricky to do my friend went to collage for hair. Good Luck.

My mom did when I was 9 or 10, I hated it. I personally would never perm my daughter's hair that young.

no she is too young yet

but you can always set it in small rollers to create temporary curls, You could also teach her to roller set her hair so that she can set it whenever she wants her hair to be curly

also as she is only 9 and you did let her get it permed, She will probaly get fed up with her perm after a couple of weeks and will want her hair to be straight again
