A short while ago the question was asked "how happy are you right now?" Most people who answered gave their reasons for being happy outside influences. Does that mean that chance or luck, atleast in part determine happiness. Furthermore other cultures have different beliefs as to what is good and bad, people have been happy for reasons of pleasure, work, pain, people have even rejoiced over being beaten. So is your happiness controlled by what happens to you or by how you see what happens to you? and if the latter why are so many people unhappy, are they just prisoners of their culture and society?

It can be very difficult in this crazy world to feel true joy or happiness, and unfortunately many people fill their lives w/ all sorts of pursuits, wealth, entertainment, etc., thinking those things will make them happy. 9 times out of 10 they discover that they weren't really happy... they were just busy.

I think most of it comes from inside, but it matters very much what you do with the good "outside" stuff that happens to you. Didn't mean to sound confusing. :)

Things can make you happy. But being a happy person can only come from the inside.

I caught the tail end of a special on lottery winners. This one had the philosophy that, if you were a happy person without money, you'll be a happy person with money.

Makes sense, and certainly explains why so many lottery winners (so I've heard) are miserable.

Happiness is a form of emotion & release. When we are happy and laughing, our body is releasing endorphins that make us feel "happy". So often outside influences help us feel happy. The same dictates the sad people, their levels are down, and go through their life accordingly. It is (factually) unhealthy to be depressed, your body (organs rather) "eat" away at themselves (ie ulcers, muscle tension & tendency for breakouts etc), so as Bob Marley says, "Don't worry ~ be happy." And the other song that may increase happiness "Red red wine makes me feel so fine" ~ Jesus said so too!:o]

I think happiness is mostly a choice - so that would be internal, at the same time most people choose to let various external things effect that.
