According to the Theory of Fundamentalist Christianity, non-Christians will be punished by God in a place called "hell" or "lake of fire". This is based on a book called "The Holy Bible".

Supposedly the soul will be in "hell" for eternity.

Let's further suppose that eternity is 1 trillion years.

So the soul will be tortured for 1 trillion years because of a decision the soul made while on Earth, to not believe as a Christian.

The average life span is currently 70 years.

The ratio of punishment is 1 trillion units to 70 units.

Am I missing something?

No. You have one chance to go to Heaven. If you miss it, you miss it. And eternity will be longer that 1 trillion years.

Yes, you're missing something. Just like outer space, time is infinite. This means an eternity is that, infinite. So the current ratio is infinite:70 which also translates to infinite:infinite. In other words it doesn't matter whether you spend 10 years or 100 years as a non-Christian you'll still receive an infinite of damnation. And since you're first on God's list, enjoy!

What you're missing is that a trillion years is the same proportion of eternity as a microsecond.

So actually, the doctrine of eternal punishment is infinitely more ridiculous and abhorrent than your assessment of it.

And do you know... people like Aquinas actually said that the folks in Heaven would listen with enjoyment to the screams of the damned.

Barbarians.

That ratio isn't even close when you consider what eternity really is. Putting the arbitrary number of one trillion isn't nearly enough. That a sincere, searching person would receive that kind of punishment from a "loving god" is ludicrous. How can anyone accept that, unless this god scares the crap out of them too.

Just wondering, is the Lake of Fire anywhere near the Ring of Fire? You know, that one burns, burns, burns too.

Well..I've heard two different things....a lot of Bible scholars feel that the Bible is to be taken literally...when the passage makes sense in it's written form. There are of course metaphors in every language and time period. So you have to keep that in mind whenever you read certain passages to determine whether or not the verse was written in the literal sense or as a metaphor. You should use a study bible, like Quest...there are a lot of helpful side notes about the language of the text.

The vehicle called time separates dimensions. On this quarantine station called earth, from now to the end of time is Future. From now to the beginning of time is called past.
Every time a future reference criss crosses to past, we have a transitory state called present. See how quickly present rushes pass to past? When the time ingredient is pulled out of this clock, how can you use past time to comput something outside of this mechanism?

Ecclesiastes 3.15 15 That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past. 16 And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there. 17 I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. 18

by saying it is 70 trillion is like compariing .000000000000000000000000001 to 1 trillion.... you just cant do it Eternity=∞

also Allah know what is in the disbelievers hearts, He knows that even if He gave the disbelievers 100 life times that the disbelievers would not believe.

You're close the actual length of eternity is "elleventy-grabillion"...

so the actual factual math = its eleventy grabillion to 70... unless you die young and are a bastard sinner then it is even worse...

Hey spare the hand, spoil the child, besides if you don't suffer for ever and ever how are you going to learn your lesson.... think about it monkey man.

YO
Hell was not made for people. It was made for Satan and his fallen angels. Satan was the first to make something or someone other than God, the ruler of his life (in his case he made himself out to be god).

People have the same drives and temptations but God knows this since it is He who made us! He wants us to choose to live our lives His way, in relationship with Him and in recognition of His rule. When we make ourselves out to be rulers of our lives, we pervert the drives and intelligence that He gave to us.

That said, it is NOT as easy to get into Hell as it is made out to be. God is a loving God, fair and just, and He will continually present Himself to those who do not believe until the day that they finally say no the last time. He is master of the universe and will use the entire resources of the universe to reach out to us, if it would make a difference.

He created us for relationship with Him. There is no other real purpose to our existance other than to worship Him and be in relationship with HIm. Mankind was created perfect (in the Garden) but soon yielded to temptation. BTW, the sin was NOT eating the apple, but deciding on their own that it was good for eating. Previous to that point, God determined what was good.

Keeping the relationship part in mind, if we choose to enter into relationship with God, that relationship will last for eternity - that is , not a trillion years, but forever - a trillion, trillion, trillion years (ad infinitum). However, if we continually choose to say no to that relationship, we will eventually become "cold" or "hardened" to God's pleadings and at that point, we can no longer be reached. Such a person cannot live in eternity with God since no one can serve two masters and that person has chosen to serve their own self as master. Therefore, they have chosen to send themselves to hell - wherever and what ever it is. Thus, God doesn't send anyone to hell, we send ourselves...

BTW - my own theory of hell is a bit different.
It's night and I'm walking down a cold, wet, beach in the rain when I spot a beautiful beach house up ahead. The lights are on, it's warm and dry, the music's blastin' and everybody is there having a good time!
As I get closer, I see that there are guards, dogs, barbed wire - I cannot go inside because the owner doesn't know me and I do not have an invitation.
I stand there in the rain, alone, in indescribable pain and loneliness knowing that I had recieved several invitations but had turned down every one because I wanted to do things MY way. That, is my image of hell.

I hear a lot of people tell me that they want to go to hell because everyone they know will be there and it's going to be a big party.
CORRECTION: Everybody you know will NOT be there...the party is going to be in heaven, and the pain will be being stuck in hell - in full view and knowledge of where you could have been - IF ONLY....
