My kitten, Duffers, and I have a great realtionship, and a routine. When I get home from work, I change out of work clothes and we play for awhile. Before we play, I pick him up and he 'lumps' in my arms, purring merrily, whiskers forward with contentment. He nuzzles me, then we play. He is an indoor cat, and is just about 12 weeks old. He eats okay, no litter box problems, etc.
Yesterday, when I got home, he didn't want to be picked up, nor did he want to play. He paced around the apartment meowing like I'd never heard before. (I have his basic meows down and understand what they mean). He stayed uncharacteristically aloof for about four hours until I coaxed him into playing for a little bit.
This morning, though, he was fine, as he usually is. So, is it possible that he was just having a blah day?

Yes it is possible that he wasn't having a good day. In fact my cat has done that several times. It does sound weird but it is true.

I have a 15 year old cat who seems to have bad and good days. Sometimes he wants to be alone and acts like he is achky. He growls and hisses at the other pets. The other days he is up in my lap being all lovey dovey. I just know they have their ups and downs just like us human animals

When my cat does the loud mournful meowing it means she's sick or in pain. If yours is acting OK today, that's good, but if it starts up again soon call your vet. Could be nothing, could be something.

Yes I think they can , my older cat , she has to put up with my new little kitty , that will always bug her and want to play with her. So I have to say yes they can.

I would say yes. If dogs and people can have bad moods, cats certainly can.
