I have a name in mind for a plumbing buisness i am looking at setting up. Where do i look to see if another company has already registered that name

www.companieshouse.gov.uk - i think webcheck is what you want to look at. You should also check the patents office, who look after the register of trade marks (which is a different thing to having a company name!)

Go to Companies House Website - you can actually register your company on-line for £150. Very easy process.

Check with your states Contractors License Board. They will list all company names
