The serpent considered himself equal to God by his arrogance. His goal was and is to disrupt, defile, and destroy Gods creation. By deceiving Eve, he set into motion a series of events which led to man's fall from grace and separation from God. Adam and Eve were cast out of paradise and the earth was cursed because of it. The great thing is that God provided a way for man to reconcile and return to Him, eating from the tree of life, which is Jesus Christ. Eating that which is poison to the serpent.

Here's the truth. Read this the other day and thought it was fabulous.

"God, I have a problem."

"What's the problem, Eve?"

"I know you created me and provided this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals, as well as that hilarious comedic snake, but I'm just not happy."

"And why is that, Eve?"

"God, I'm lonely and bored, and sick to death of apples!

"Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man for you."

"Man? What is that, God?"

"A flawed, base creature with many bad traits. He'll lie, cheat and be vain. He will be witless and will revel in childish things. He'll be bigger than you and will like fighting, hunting and killing things. He won't be too smart, so he will need your advice to think properly. He will have a very limited emotional capacity and will need to be trained. He will look silly when he is aroused, but since you've been complaining, I'll create him in such a way that he will satisfy your physical needs. And you most certainly will never be bored again!"

"Sounds great," Eve says, with ironically raised eyebrows, "but what's the catch, God?"

"Well ... you can have him on one condition."

"And what's that, God?"

"As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant and self-admiring ... so you'll have to let him believe I made him first. And it will be our little secret. You know, woman to woman."

When Satan approached Eve (through the speech of the serpent), he actually challenged the rightfulness and righteousness of Jehovah’s sovereignty. He intimated that God was unrightfully withholding something from the woman; he also declared that God was a liar in saying that she would die if she ate the forbidden fruit. Additionally, Satan made her believe she would be free and independent of God, becoming like God. By this means this wicked spirit creature raised himself higher than God in Eve’s eyes, and Satan became her god, even though Eve, at the time, apparently did not know the identity of the one misleading her. By his action he brought man and woman under his leadership and control, standing up as a rival god in opposition to Jehovah.—Ge 3:1-7.

Because God had forbidden Adam and Eve not to take and eat this fruit not the serpant.

The Apple represents the knowledge of knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

Remind me to ask God that when I get to heaven. He knew what he was doing when he deceived Eve. He wasn't there to eat the fruit of the tree of life.

God told Adam & Eve not to eat of the fruit. And, it was the fruit of "Knowledge of Good and Evil," not life.

He already knew the difference between good and bad and he didn't deceive Eve anyway. What he told her was the truth, god admitted her eyes were opened and they had become like him, knowing good and bad.

I believe it was the tree of knowledge, not the tree of life, because he told them their "eyes would be open".
The tree of Life was hidden from them after they ate the fruit so they would not be able to live forever in their sinful state.

Because the object of the exercise was to cause Adam and eve to commit sin.

Figuretively speaking, the serpant had already eaten the fruit. That's why he's called the devil. He wanted it all.
