I have had it on my heart to become a foster parent and it's been on my heart for a long time. I finally picked up the phone and called the children's aid society and they'd like me to come for orientation on Monday. Any advice for me if I do become a foster parent? I'm a singlemom with a 7 year old daughter, if that info helps. Thanks.

That's awesome!!!! I know a lady who originally did foster care and now has two adopted sons! Make them feel as welcome as possible (whether baby or older) and show them that no matter what they do wrong or right you will always love them. Don't treat them extra special, becuase that might make your daughter feel left out, but treat them both equally.
Good luck!!!!

I have often thought of becoming a foster parent. I would love to be able to help children in need. I think the most important thing to remember is that you have to be prepared to give them back to the parent if that is what ends up happening(which is why I could not do it). You also have to be prepared for any situation that could be thrown your way (mental illness, abuse child, drug addicted baby) It takes a very special person to be a foster parent and you are an amazing person if you can do it. I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

I've wanted to do the same for so long as well but keep in mind many of these children come with many mental issues and these issues you cant change or make better with just your love this i know first hand due to working with juveniles in behavioral health facilities. it is a good idea though if you have the time and patience for this type of situation......good luck!

If you have a seven year-old daughter, consider limiting yourself to providing foster care for girls, and for YOUNGER or same-age boys only.

Do all the training they (CAS) require and recommend.

Talk to other foster parents about their experiences, why they foster, the joys and challenges....

KUDOS!

Go with it.

Don't let the grueling questioning hinder you from such a noble calling.
