A great french philospher onces said "we are taught everything we need to know instead of searching for ourselve, which makes us believe a lot but know little". could it be that people get so upset when something is said contrary to their belief because they don't know but only believe, and if you prove them wrong they lose their fondation? And that could be a very scary thing. People just want to be taught because it is easier then finding it for themselves. But the problem with that is that they are easily led astray and since they don't think for themselves they cannot find their way back. so the question stands why do people get so upset when something contrary to what they believe is said?

Thats right, people are more than often are taught what to think and not how to think, it upsets them when thier beliefs are questioned because they could be wrong and deep down inside it scares them.

Like you said, people don't like having their worldviews attacked (even passively - if I call myself an Atheist I'm not directly saying that a Christian is wrong for believing in God, but I am implying it). It's scary to think that everything you've bilt your life around could be wrong, and most of us react to fear with anger.

Don't take this the wrong way, but aren't you doing the same kind of thing by asking this question? You already believe in your answer (obtained from some philosopher, rather than from searching yourself), and now you are looking for other people to validate it (no one wants to be the only one who believes in something) rather than repudiate it.

That being said, it is important to go through this process. It's insane to think that anyone can come up with all of life's answers without looking to what others have said and done. As well, we sometimes can't debunk our own ideas for ourselves, and we need input from outside to help us see things from a different prosepective. I think the important thing (as you sem to imply) is to keep an open mind about things.

I have only observed people getting upset when their beliefs are disrespected, not different. It becomes disrespect when people understand the belief and mock it anyway. A great example would be (Question) If Muslims believe Jesus to have been a prophet then why do they not believe what he said? (Disrespect) Muslims claim Jesus is a prophet and deny the very son of GOD they will be thrown into the lake of fire with all non believers.. That was an extreame example but I hope it made my point. My walk with Jesus comes from a lifetime of getting to know him personally. I don't have a clue where people get off thinking Jesus is a concept. Jesus is a person. What you do with him is your business.
May GOD richly bless you.

Because nobody likes to be wrong, and the assumption is that there's always only one "right" answer. The thing is, when it comes to spiritual matters, there really isn't a "right" answer - there's the one that leads you closer to your true self, but that differs from person to person.

That concept is a little much for the average spiritual sheep to grasp, though, so they see the wider perspective as something threatening, and people who feel threatened get angry.

because some people take their opinion/belief as a representation of who they are. when someone told them something contrary to what they believe in, they take the matter personally and feel rejected/opposed as a person instead of realizing that it is only the "subject matter" being put into question/ more in-depth discussion.

Because many people confuse belief with physical fact.

Often many are not willing to believe in a new fact because it contradicts what they believe.

Example:
My moms neighbor beleives that Jefferson is a christian.
This belief is in fact central to her belief in god.
Yet its not even relevant to such a faith.
Therefore when proof of the fact that he is not christian is
presented, she refuses to hear of it.
And brands anybody who would speak it to be evil.

because they'd rather not question; it's easier to demonize someone with an opposing view than to weigh the merits.

No one likes their belief attacked. They feel they are being attacked when someone opposes their beliefs.
