More than 50 million Medicaid recipients will soon have to produce birth certificates, passports or other documents to prove that they are United States citizens, and everyone who applies for coverage after June 30 will have to show similar documents under a new federal law.
The requirement is meant to stop the "theft of Medicaid benefits by illegal aliens," in the words of Representative Charlie Norwood, Republican of Georgia, a principal author of the provision, which was signed into law by President Bush on Feb. 8.
In enforcing the new requirement, federal and state officials must take account of passions stirred by weeks of national debate over immigration policy. State officials worry that many blacks, American Indians and other poor people will be unable to come up with the documents needed to prove citizens

No because they are illegal and by Federal law are not eligible to receive these benefits. I don't understand why people are so brainwashed into believing that "Illegal America" is on WELFARE

Okay, so illegal immigrants are collecting welfare and medicaid...haha that just makes the government sound stupid!! What the hell are they doing with their so called intelligence?

Illegal Immigrants can't get Medicaid & Welfare...HELLO, you need the proper indentification and paper work to get it, if they are recieving it, the government should be focusing on hiring smarter people.

Anyway, If you've come into any country and have gone through the proper paper work, you should get what ever that country offers any other citizens. The welfare thing should be cut out all together regardless of race, to many useless lazy people out there. They should get medical if they are working legally only.

Shouldn't this have been the requirement to begin with??!! Or at least some type of investigation into the ss#'s that were being used to verify authenticity before benefits were approved??!! Come on now, you cannot just place the blame on people taking advantage of the program when security measures werent taken to begin with!!! Will everything that goes wrong in America always be blamed on illegal aliens (from any country)?? What if all illegals were deported, who would you blame for everything that goes wrong in this country??!!

Why can't a LEGAL citizen come up with the proper documentation? That's completely ridiculous. They have plenty of access to get proper identification. As far as illegals, we need to cut them off from all government programs as fast as possible. They have no legal right to those benefits.

Just for reference, I know a family who moved into my neighborhood...a NICE neighborhood, mom doesn't speak English, not even a citizen, got a free house given to her by the City of Tucson, gets food stamps, free utilities, free uniforms for her kids and welfare money on top of it. She doesn't even work and doesn't even plan to. Now how is this a good idea in anyone's eyes? It's horrible and unfair.

I completely agree, why would i wanna pay into something that benefits someone that isn't paying into it. If someone wants to become an American citizen then they are entitled to all benefits. yes, i know that it is very difficult to become an American citizen but that is the way that it is. The rules and regulations that our government has established is the reason we have a great nation like we do.

ILLEGAL... if they are here illegally, they are not entitled to benefits! NO WELFARE, NO MEDICAID...NOT FOR ILLEGALS! Legal American Citizens only should be able to receive these benefits.

Why is this a problem? It does not cost anything to get a copy of your birth certificate, so "poor" people should not have a problem, and it is impossible to make this about race.

Your talking about a drain on the system that has no flow coming in.A group that doesn't pay taxes and disproportionately takes from it.We have millions of people who pay taxes who can't afford health care while we are providing it to others who are breaking the law simply by being here.Besides if it's a life threatening emergency hospitals are required to care for everyone regardless of immigration status.

Where does it say in the Medicaid or Welfare guidelines that these benefits are owed to any person who crawls over a border to get them?
Don't be ridiculous! If illegals don't get cut off the dole, they'll NEVER stop coming here

Uhh...I thought producing a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship was mandatory...even though those crafty bastards can easily forge them!

As soon as this country puts its foot down of these illegal aliens and blocking every "loophole" these people abuse to get these benefits, I think this illegal immigration crap will curve...notice I said "curve" because everyone knows you can't completely be rid of an 'infestation'...

Princess

God given princess for all to love,
kissed by the angels, sent from above.

You await my arrival, it will be soon.
It could be morning or by light of the moon.

I cannot see you, but I hear you voice.
The first time you hold me, you will rejoice.

Puppies and rainbows are now on my wall,
I'll be the luckiest baby of all.

Teddy bears beside me, a smile on your face,
You just wait, mama, I'll be your saving
grace
