It is not just that human beings are greedy.
His motives are led by lust, falsehood, treachery etc. also.
The human nature is so complex that while condemning these things in others, we ourselves do the same things.
I am not at all trying to justify any negative aspect in man, but isn't it true that the very childish nature is that of greed?
As soon as it is in contact with the outside world it always tries to possess, not to give up or give away.
May be this nature in human being is an inborn 'quality' to make him/her survive.

There's a delicate balance here. I believe God wants us to be self-sufficient (be someone that can help others rather than the person that always needs help).

So to that point, money is a good thing, but then yeah some of the darker sides of human nature can creep in - greed, the desire for power, and all of that can turn it into a rotten thing.

Human nature is complex. It has elements of both compassion and competition. We have survived for as long as we have because of this. Humans are a congretory animal. We tend to form groups. And like other species, we tend to show compassion towards those within the group and enmity towards those outside of it. Groups also have hierarchies for which certain members vie for upper levels.

Because of this, we enjoy a wide range of emotions including love, hate, jealousy, lust, confusion, pride, and many others. All have their place in our lives. All are useful. Yet because societies evolve much faster than biology, they frequently come about during inappropriate times or to inappropriate degrees.

Still, most people are decent people who are just trying to live their lives in relative peace with their neighbors.

That is being philosophical about it. Philosophy helps us to rationalise our failures and our short comings. In practise, we have to fend for ourselves, we are responsible for our life, for the sustenance of it, to make the ghost in the physique. It is your dharma to toil for the basic needs. Unless the basic needs are fulfilled, you will not be tempted to look for realisation higher spiritual ideals. Hence, you can not ignore your mundane duties and commitment. It is expected of you, as a domestic person, to earn for your livelihood and for the welfare all those who are dependent on you. It is only the greed that is to be condemned. In your quest for fending for yourselves, you ought not to deprived others rightful dues. Dharma and personal needs have to be balanced, while doing your mundane duties.

Money = independence.

If you have enough money, you don't have to work, you get to do whatever you want, and you don't have to answer to anybody but yourself.

BTW, it can also be passed down to the kiddos.
