English is widely spoken around the world and across Europe. The French want their language to be dominant in Europe. Their problem is that newly signed up member states such as Poland, Lithuania etc. do not have French as a second language but have English instead.

Worldwide, the driving force behind the advance of English are the Americans.

So, Europe will have to choose a linguafranca and it will have to be English because its the second language most people are likely to know and speak.

I live in German and I must say that the standard of English here is very good. Better than some native born English speakers. The problem is that the British don't like other languages. They simply feel that everybody should speak English. It is a stupid attitude. Since beginning to learn German I wish that I had learned another language earlier.

That's a generalisation, many European people speak English fluently, and find the language quite useful. Perhaps they don't like it because quite a fewtourists won't make the effort to speak the native language when it's possible to use English. With English becoming more and more wide spoken perhaps they also feel as lesser known languages are under threat. There isn't really any way to know why those who don't like English dislike it, unless you go around asking everyone. I hope you get a satisfactory answer from this. :)

The English speaking nations are generally complacent with regards to foreign languages. English is the Worlds first or second language OF CHOICE in India, China, Russia, Africa, Scandinavia, Japan, UK, USA, Canada, Australia. New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland,Pakistan, the majority of the world speaks or wishes to speak English. That may give you a tiny clue as to why France and Germany have reservations over the language of the planet, English!!!

Europeans are frightened because they know English is the only language that will survive the next hundred years.

English people might as well learn Latin because French and German are pretty much dead languages anyway.

Why not? Well, it depends where you are in Europe.

You can probably go anywhere in Scandinavia and The Netherlands and find most people speak English.

Larger countries tend not to for various reasons. The French are very defensive of their culture and are wary of "creeping anglicization" of their language and culture.

The Italians second language is mainly French.

The Germans demand that everybody else in eastern Europe speak German.

Educated people from all countries speak English though because it is the main language of commerce and science.

Or better still, how many English people are interested in learning languages of other EU countries, for example, French or Germany (some of the closest neighbours)?

Possibly because of English speaking tourists expecting the locals to be able to speak English and not bothering to attempt the local language?

Apologies to those who do bother.

I think it´s not only as if Non-Europeans like English language.

It´s just that English has become the international language.

It's spoken all over the world, it´s easy to be learnt also.
