Offer a referral discount-if a customer enters your store and purchases a product or service, offer 10-20% off of their next purchase from your store if they refer you to a friend. Coupons work very well as they can bring them back to you and keeping track of referrals is made easier.

I was a Yellow Page consultant for 25 years and most of my accounts were small, mom and pop businesses that needed to reach their local market with a minimum of effort and money. I had several health food accounts and most had a 2 x 4 inch YP ad that did very well for them. List your products, location and you may even be able to get coop from a local supplier.
FYI: i also wrote the best-selling book on the subject.

when i started a house cleaning service, i made up flyers and got a permit to put them on cars in the parking lots of the mall, wal-mart, the grocery store. it did bring me a lot of business. i paid my kids a penny a flyer. they thought it was great fun to put flyers on the cars. i used a bright colored paper and had my phone number and what i did on my flyer. i had to get a permit from the city to do it though. the permit cost me $15. it wasn't hard to put them on cars either. just put them under the windshield wiper.
