Surreal = Something that seems unreal. Not true to life. For example, a rabbit that is purple with yellow polka dots. That is "surreal" because in real life, it does not happen.

Surrealism is the art of changing the picture to make it "not right". Say you have a picture of fruit... if the fruit is in the bowl, you could call that "realistic" because the subject matter makes sense. On the other hand if the fruit was floating above the bowl without any reason as to why it is floating, that may be "surrealistic".

Salvador Dali and Escher are good examples of surrealism in painting. You may want to even include an artist like Peter Max in that category of "Surrealism" His paintings are wild uses of color and fantasy that are very surrealistic.

However, an artist like Andy Warhol would not be surrealistic, but rather interpretive. The use of color in Warhol's case is used to convey the ordinary in an unusual way. Not surreal, but different.

Another example of modern or interpretive painting would be LeRoy Neiman, very exciting and colorful pictures, not surreal, but interpretive.

The term surreal refers to that which is beyond real, into the realm where dreams and the unconciousness lay. The imagery found in surrealist works are usually not tied to anything one would encounter in the real world, contrast this with traditional subject matter such as still lifes or figure paintings to get a better understanding.

Surrealist artist uses their dreams and imagination to paint. This means painting things so ordinary and having a title that is quite dramatic. So you get the picture which is totally different in the "visual" but it means something else. Eg., the painting by Magrit called "this is not a pipe" actually has a picture of a pipe. It was movement that stemmed out of the disgusting war and the emmergence of freudian principle of the unconscious mind.

Surrealism as a visual movement had found a method: to expose psychological truth by stripping ordinary objects of their normal significance, in order to create a compelling image that was beyond ordinary formal organization, in order to evoke empathy from the viewer.

check out the works of Heronymus Bosch to see true black serrealistic painting. He has alway been one of my favorite artist, because to look at the tripdic and try to anyalize the figures and the meaning behind the titles and the work is an awesome task

He produced several triptychs, works of three paintings on wooden panels that are attached to each other. Among his most famous is The Garden of Earthly Delights. The left panel of this triptych depicts paradise with Adam and Eve and many wondrous animals. The large central panel shows the Garden of Earthly Delights with numerous nude figures and tremendous fruit and birds. The right panel is a vision of Hell with depictions of fantastic punishments of the various types of sinners. When the exterior panels are closed the viewer can see, painted in grisaille, God creating the Earth
