Is it fair we have to look down?

It was a beautiful, warm summer day,
I took my wife and our three kids to the park.

We laughed and we played, like a family should,
Until it was time to head home, just after dark.

We stopped at the dairy queen, and ordered ice cream,
Because we promised our kids, that’s exactly what we’d do.

As we drove home, singing songs and talking about the day,
I realized I was looking down, at my wife and my children to.

A car came from out of nowhere, and ripped our van in two,
My kids are covered with blankets, to hide their missing face.

And as I’m looking down I see my wife, gasping for her last breath,
Its then I knew, she would join us, in this different place.

And now I see myself, amongst the metal and broken glass,
Because the place where I had been sitting, is now in the trunk.

The car that took our life’s, on that beautiful summer day,
Was driven by nothing more, than a DRUNK.

So do you truly think its fair that my family has to look down?
At the ones who put us here while they continue to enjoy their fun.

I wish you could see, all the lives you have cut short,
All because you wanted to drive, and drink because you thought it was fun.

I know someone, he was an acquaintance of mine who killed a woman when he was driving drunk. We were all at my friend's wedding reception -- they had an open bar. When we saw him, he was really wasted. There were almost 300 people attending the wedding and it was even on a military base no one really knows how he got out of there.

Well, after the reception was done, my husband drove some of my friend's home (including the mother of the bride). As we were driving, we looked over to our right and saw the most horrific accident we ever seen. We found out later that it was the guy at the wedding.

He didn't get far from the reception (he was maybe a mile away). It turns out he was heading east towards the freeway. He was swerving and hit the median. He must have been going really fast because his car flew into the air and landed directly on top of a car that was coming from the opposite direction. The front of his car landed right in top and onto the front windshield. The other driver didn't have a chance. She died instantly.

A lot of people don't take drinking and driving seriously, but it is a serious thing. It pisses me off when my friends talk about how they went out drinking or partying and drove home after. I always tell them about this story and all I get are blank stares; kinda like, thanks for ruining my story. I don't care though...

I really feel for the woman's family and friends. That is definitely not the way to go.

You know I look at the Attitude Era when it became cool to cheer the heel and boo the face. And now today they have been brainwashed to believe that every heel is somehow cool ie Orton, Regal, Jericho. They believe the only way to like Cena is if he was a heel. The older crowd who sees through the pageantry and comic bookesque approach, just can't accept a good guy doing good guy stuff. Funny example, when did the Joker become more popular than Batman? I seems we've become a villianous society. From reality TV to real life. People care more about the shooter than the people who get shot. But the kids, the kids love the Superhero, they like to be told to "Each your vitamins, and say your prayers" or "Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect" or Remembering "the three I's Intellingence, Integrity, and Intensity." (I kid, I kid) Fans must remember this is a PG television aimed at young adults much like all sports and that is why we have the cookie cutter faces for the kids and the diabolical villainous heels for the young adults and luckily enough for all of us, they do battle every week with the faces winning about 3 to 1 times. As an adult, I can live with that. "You take the good you take the bad, you take the rest and there you have...................." One funny saying I read on here is "you either die a hero, or you live long enough to become a villian" Sounds like Hogan to me.... NNNNNNEEWWW WORLD ORDER 4Life!

So is the big news here that you are posting to Y!A from the great beyond? That's pretty freaky.

Do you go to the local bar on weekends and volunteer as a designated driver? I do two weekends a month plus they have my number down there and know they can call whenever somebody needs a ride. I live in a small town so I know most of the drunks and where they live.

Blame the drunk driver all you want and I truly believe they should stay off the road and we could have no drunk drivers. But I wonder also about the content of your poem. If you were in fact "LOOKING DOWN". Perhaps we could say the drunk driver is not totally to blame. So go ahead and tell me off. I'm sure my answer won't be popular either. But you succeeded in getting the sympathy you wanted. Your tragedy (and it was a tragedy) should not be displayed for public sympathy it only makes your pain and that of those who read it more acute.I have experienced a similar situation of a son. But I cannot fully blame the drunk driver. The driver was drunk, but my son wasn't looking where he was going and was killed. Would it have been better if the driver had been sober? Of course not. My son would still be gone.

I know this won't be the popular answer and there is no defense for driving drunk but....

""As we drove home, singing songs and talking about the day,
I realized I was looking down, at my wife and my children to.""

Maybe if you had been watching the road instead of looking down you could have avoided the other car.

Who is more guilty... to inattentive driver or the drunk one?
------------------------------------------
Someone has pointed out to me that they think I misunderstood the poem. I read it as the driver was looking down and not paying attention to the road. Someone else reads it as the driver was looking down as a result that he was already dead. I get this from the second mention of looking down but not with the first mention. Therefore I stand by my comments.

IF indeed I misread it then I am sorry but I didn't think it was wrote very well in the first place.

I am agaist drunk drivers and obviously just as against inattentive drivers. For those that choose to give me a thumbs down I suppose it is within your rights to do so but if you really think about it I think you will find that I am right.

Oh my goodness. What a tragic story. This poem is so different from the others you have written.

This type of story is told far too often in our world today. People need to understand that the real losers in drunk driving are the innocent people they kill.

When you die, your soul is 'comatose' until everyone is resurrected, and then it's debatable whether you'll remember your moment of death. Don't use this phony victims' right of revenge to dramatize what's already a tragedy.
The ones who suffer are the survivors of the dead, and the victims who don't die right away or have to go through a horribly painful recovery. They are the ones that may seek revenge, and if they don't, God is the ultimate judge.
