1980's I think.

I think that a big part of it is that the traditional values no longer hold any ground for most people. Back in the 50s or 60s, if you had premarital sex and the woman got pregnant, it was just a given that you would get married. Most of people of today's society don't agree with this. I think that the high divorce rate and the increase in casual sex ("friends with benefits") have also contributed to the number of children born out of wedlock. I have a 5 year old son from another relationship, I am now married and have another son by a different man. All of this has been very hard on my oldest son. He spends most of his time at our house, but still has difficulty going back and forth between houses. I realize that this will have long term effects on him. I'm not sure what they will be. I imagine that he will have trouble connecting to others (he already seems to have this problem with his peers), for fear that they will not always be there for him.

The phrase originated from a rap song that came out, in 1997, called "That's just my Baby's Daddy". Rap artists were one hit wonders named B-Rock and the Bizz.

I think the phrase really broke in to the mainstream in the mid/late 90's with rap song "My baby daddy" by T-bird ( I think that's the rapper's name he was only a one hit wonder)

before that it the term was used by people but I think that song pushed it into the mainstream lexicon.

That is funny! I rememeber a song in the like 97' that went...
"Who dat is? My baby daddy! T-bird is just my baby daddy" Or sumthin' like that. I was in middle school and me and my girlfriends just loved this song. I really have no clue, but I call my hubby MY BABY DADDY. I think it's cute- haha

When we realized that we didn't have to pay for our mistakes forever and marry someone just because we got pregnant.

Unfortunately I think I know where you are coming from. But statistics do show that teenage pregnancies have gone down. But unfortunately it is probably because birth control has become more available rather than more are obstaining from sex.

because so many people have out of wedlock babies, they had to coin a term just to identify what relation the man had to the child. probably in the early 90's it was made up, my guess anyway. But without it Maury Povich would have no show.

it became popular within the last 10 years. i personally hate it and i hate when my daughter's dad calls me his baby's momma. i think its ghetto and tasteless. but i can understand why people say it is because its alot easier to say baby daddy or baby momma because it rolls off the tongue alot better than daughters dad or sons dad.
