I have a 12 year old Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix who has alwasy been very regimented about his meals-usually the same time, measured amount, two feedings a day, very little people food, even treats at the same times. Until about 6 months ago, you could barely get the food in the bowl and he was diving right in. Suddenly he would ignore his food. He would still eat, whether it be treats or whatever, anything but his food, which has been the same brand since he was a puppy. I started "seasoning" his food..a little drizzle of honey, some cereal crumbs, Iams doggie gravy, stuff like that. Sometimes he still would not eat. He has been eating regularly again twice a day but now I have to put a little "flavor" on it for him to do that. His other behavior and health seem to be normal, no vomiting or irregular potty incidents, still drinking normally. Any thoughts?

I would get him checked at the Vet and let them know about his change in eating habits. Especially at his age, it could be the sign of a disease or illness. Keep and eye on his stool outside. If it is funny colors or begins to get diareaha like, and doesnt switch between soft and firm then he probably has an intestinal infection or some other parasite.

If you changed his food to get him to eat when he wouldn't he may have gotten use to the additives you put in it. Once he tasted things other than his normal kibble, he wont eat unless you continue to add that particular flavor. Again consult your Vet before making any major adjustments. His age may have something more to do with it also.

My opinion is that dogs are kind of like people. When you introduce a new food/taste, you will go with what you like the best...you gave him additive with his food and now that's what he likes....as long as his health is fine..go for it. Any worries about health you can consult your vet or call petsmart for free advice.
