i have a tendency to not give them money. I will go buy them a burger and fries or something like that. I have taken them coats. I worry about just giving them cash. I really don't want to give them money and them not buy something they need and spend the money on drugs or something else. I still want to help though. So I meet the need.

Giving money is a kind gesture you can show to someone in need of it. But a gift or help must be addressed with a discerning thought about whether you are really helping or allowing someone to stay dependent on being helped rather than being taught how to stand on his own two feet and work.
It may not be a surprise to find out one day that the hobo you gave $2 yesterday have a nice house in the suburbs and have more money than you for the wealth he gained from other's sweats and tears. Find a legitimate organization that handles those problems and be a part of it. Your $2 may even be shared by more than one. Then, a true generousity and a genuine desire to help are oftentimes done without having his trumpet blown.

What money? I've been out of work for over a year. Yet, when I do come across some cash, I DO give at least 10% to a worthy cuase. If I have money and a person in need approaches me, I will share. Glad to see you do too.

Why do you think giving someone money is "helping them" ????
You might have helped them buy drugs. You might have helped them buy sex. You might have helped them be able to stay on the street and take from society rather than contribute to it.
Giving money is just a lazy *** way to make yourself feel good. Give your time to a social service and really do some good.

I do help in many, many ways. With my money, my time and my talents. I've spent years helping. Have you just started or have you been at it a while too?
