Well, it depends on what you want- if you paln to work, you want cheap housing but not cheap wages otherwise it just evens out. Follow me? If you are looking to retire and wages are not an issue- that's a different story. Then on the cheap side , how about utilities etc? Alaska is cheap but the heating bills will kill you, though wages are good, cost of products is high because of having to import so much.
So there you go- no easy answers- I'm looking for the same for retirement, and I also check the cost of property taxes etc. In some states, it can be the same as a mortgage!

You can actually live on the ice floats between the islands in Alaska for free because they're not actually land and thus no one owns them- it's a bit dangerous though...if you don't know what you're doing, you'll die in about 4 hours, but you'll be free and clear while your there. Good luck!
