Hi Missy...theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate to cats. (Caffeine is also present in chocolate, but in much smaller amounts than Theobromine.)
Theobromine's effect on the cat's body:
Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant
Cardiovascular stimulant
Increase blood pressure (mild)
Nausea and vomiting
And some chocolates more toxic than others... Unsweetened (baker's) chocolate contains 8-10 times the amount of Theobromine as milk chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate falls roughly in between the two for Theobromine content. White chocolate contains Theobromine, but in such small amounts that Theobromine poisoning is unlikely. Caffeine is present in chocolate, but less than Theobromine.

There is a chemical in chocloates and cocoa that most animals can't digest. Do not let your cat eat chocolate. If he does, rush them down to the vet immediately, or try to make him throw up. White chocolate is probably okay so it doesn't contain any cocoa (and it's not real chocolate).

Chocolate is deadly to cats and dogs. If they eat to much of it, it can be toxic. Also never give a cat aspirn. That too can be toxic and hard for them to digest. You can however give dogs aspirn in small amounts to help with pain. NEVER CATS!!!!

Yes it can cause heart failure if it is a high test chocolate. In addition it contains a lot more calories then they need and will cause weight gain which can lead to a lot of ther problems. I would just buy the lean treats from your vet.
