The Pharisees were trying to trick Jesus and get him into trouble either with the Romans on hand or with His own crowd when they asked Him if it was okay to pay taxes. Remember, the Jewish people at that time were really mad at the Romans and wanted their Messiah to overthrow the Roman Government. So if Jesus responded to pay, they'd get mad. If Jesus responded not to pay, the Romans would arrest Him. Jesus asked for a Denari (a coin of the time). He then asked what likeness was imprinted on the coin. The answer was Caesar. Jesus then said "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesars, but render unto God that which is God's".

"While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and 'sinners' came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples 'Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?'
On hearing this, Jesus said "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice' For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners." - Matthew 9:10-13

I know for me, it's the only proof of Jesus's existence I'll accept. Don't worry though, I'm not holding my breath.
