I think it would be a good idea to have a long talk with someone who is a neutral third party who can help you take a look at the reasons why you did what you did and what steps you can do to right the wrong. I would suggest either a pastor or a counselor. Killing or harming an animal is usually a sign of a bigger problem inside of you that hasn't come to the surface. This is something that needs to be dealt with and your conscience is letting you know that. It is a really good sign that you can hear the rumblings of your conscience, so don't ignore it. Talk to someone who can help you find out what is really going on.

Go to confession with a contrite heart. Know that Jesus is in the confessional working though the priest. The priest will ab sol you of your sin and after receiving the sacrament of reconciliation you will be renewed. Continue to amend your life and try as best you can to sin no more. You feel the way you feel because that is the temporal punishment due to sin. This will go away.
Before going to confession humbly go to your wife and explain
your situation, trust in her and trust in God. There is a reason
that the truth sets one free. If one of your children does wrong
and comes to you really sorry for having done something wrong
would you not forgive? Never doubt Gods Mercy, that would be an insult to God. I hope this will help you

Archman,
I don't know the details about the whole thing with the pet, but I will say this. All people are sinners and all people sin. That's a simple statement, but it's true.
Perhaps joining a church and becoming a Christian, if you are a Christian returning to church and ask for forgineness, this would be the best thing for you and your family. Every person has in them this huge void, some fill it with evil, some with myth, some with god. The human mind will fill this void with something, so it's up to you to make that choice.

do you know Jesus Christ?
you need to confess your lie to God and your family
and your act of killing - it is actually your rodent to kill if that's what you want to do,but I gather that isn't what this is all about. There's something more to this than meets the eye.
But it may not be your rodent. If it was given to your children then it belonged to them and not to you. And you didn't really have a right to kill it.
Read Romans 7 and 8 - O wretched man that I am who will save me from the body of this death

Well, what religion are you? Some Christian religions require a confession said to a priest, some just say pray to God. I don't know anything about any other religion, sorry.
If it makes you feel better, it's good that you feel remorse. Tell your family, they should know. Go my child, and sin no more.

Confess to God. It is ok. You might want to seek some counseling---spiritual in nature. I sense you are struggling w/a spiritual issue. Have you been under stress--was it something that happened accidentally, did you do it for the thrill of it. Ask yourself all these questions. You may want to confide in someone who is a professional. Remember, God loves you inspite of your actions.

how did you kill it? purposely or accidently? if your anger is getting to you perhaps you should see a psychiatrist, there are drugs that will effect the chemical balance in your brain making it easier to stay in control and not be easily set off.. but dont be too hard on yourself, if its not a constantly reoccuring thing and its once in a while, everyone slips once in a while we are all human. its just how you deal with what you have. forgive other when they slip they will forgive you of yours.

You'll make mistakes from time-to-time. The power of forgiveness is overwhelming, therefore, confess to your family and God what you have done and I guarantee you'll feel 110% better.
