A werewolf (or lycanthrope) in folklore and mythology is a person who shapeshifts into a wolf, either purposely, by using magic, or after being placed under a curse. The medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury associated the transformation with the appearance of the full moon, but this concept was rarely associated with the werewolf until the idea was picked up by modern fiction writers. Most modern fiction agrees that a werewolf can be killed if shot by a silver bullet, although this was not a feature of folk legends. Werewolves are sometimes held to become vampires after death.

To make this easier, I will use an answer that I have given to others that have asked this same or similar question. I feel that it summarizes my thoughts on becoming a werewolf.

“Please, I cannot express enough how foolish your desires are and I hope you will listen to me. First of all, the whole concept of biting and transferring what a werewolf is unto somebody is a good aspect of a movie or a book, but it makes little sense in the real world. Many wolves don't even believe in the concept. Secondly, there is nothing you could do as a werewolf that would somehow make you more special. You are who you are, and being something else will not change that. Humans can do amazing things. If you believed more in your own capabilities, you would realize that you don't need to be so different to make a difference. Lastly, and most importantly, you do not know what you are wishing for. Do you think that being something like a werewolf is as they portray it in books and movies? Do you think you will magickally gain super-strength, amazing senses, etc.? If you knew what it was like, you wouldn't wish for it. I would not wish it on you. Alone, there is nothing necessarily wrong with being a werewolf. However, in relation to human society, it is unimaginably difficult. You must live every single day knowing that you are one of only so many like you in a population of 7 billion people. You must keep your true personality hidden because it might give away what you are. If you are found out, most will laugh at you or think you are crazy. Some, with an incredible passion, will desire to seek you out and kill you. Even if they never make good their threats, you still have to hear them say that they wish to kill you, for no other reason than that you are different. It's a game of hiding and hoping you won't be found out, all the while realizing that the only other people like you are scattered in places you don't even know and your hope for belief and acceptance is continually hindered by lies and misconceptions. You know in your mind that people don't believe you exist, and if they did the media and society would lead them to think that you are a monster to be killed. Please understand my words and know that there is no logical reason to want this or to want to be different. You can make a difference on your own, you just have to realize that. Stop thinking that the flesh has to change for the heart or the mind to change. If you want to be unique or special, then do it. Just be yourself, regardless of whether that self is human or werewolf.”

Two primary myths: One, be bitten by one. Two, drink water from the paw print of a wolf, preferably under a full moon. Some native american traditions say that skin changing is a natural gift that you're born with and that we have only forgotten how to use the power.

There are also groups who consider lycanthropy (the ability to shift forms, generallized to any animal-human combination despite the original 'lycan'='wolf' association) to be a multifaceted experience. These groups often divide the experience into Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual, and Dreaming shifting. Physical, of course, is the idea that they aspire to but only the most nuts think it's real. Spiritual and dreaming are the most common though there is some discussion of mental shifting as well.

In actuality, Lycanthropy is a real disease....

However, it is a psychological disease in which the human beleives him or herself to be a wolf.... So, they are not entirely fictional....
