i think what you mean is green space, because if you're talking only of open space the even if it's covered by concrete it's still open space.ecological spaces produces oxygen and breaks down and fliters harmful stuff in the enviroment.where will the wild life live and where can they find food?? alot of medicine and drugs were found in plants and these places are where you can find these.
God bless, gabe

Wetlands are extremely important to the environment, here is a website that explains it well:

Also, a web site specifically on the Bolsa Chica Reserve which is also the home to 3 endagered bird species:

open and green spaces should be preserved because it is human nature to fill in every last nook and cranny with something better or more financially viable than a swamp or bog or forest. We need them for our children's children's children so they can one day say that they saw a bird flying or a deer or an upland peat bog with black spruce. Then maybe inspire them to want to keep the environment or teach them that there's more to life than what cell phone is hot or what trashy bimbo is getting plugged this week. There are a billion good reasons to keep examples of ecosystems, but there's generally only one chance to do so.

It isnt important to do so, there are so many open spaces still it would take a few thousand years to fill
