Well, for some reason that I don't want to mention, you take that idea like an insult. If you didn't, you would see that it is the logical thing to do ( like Spock would say ) . In my country, the more languages you know, more respected you are because it is a sign of knowledge and culture. Here, you boast of your own ignorance. Need anything else ?

They don't always do that. Besides, Spanish people are from Spain, and most Spaniards who come to the United States are tourists, students, and professionals who also speak English. You might be talking about "hispanics", though, who are from Central America and South America. They don't always tell Americans to speak Spanish, either.
Anyway, America is one of the few countries in the world where we feel like we have the luxury of only speaking one language. Most people in the world are *at least* bilingual. Given that there are over 500 languages spoken in the continental United States, it might do you good to learn one or two of them. Especially one of the really useful ones like Spanish.

We dont tell "Americans" that they need to know spanish. But come on lets face it there are A LOT of mexicans in the US now, especially in Cali. Most of them dont speak english very well in any. So it would REALLY help out to know spanish. If you go places to try to get a job, most of them will ask you to be bilingual. Like me for example I was able to get this job as a receptionist/Jr loan processor ONLY becuase I know how to speak spanish. If i didnt speak spanish and english fluently I would still be a waitress....
So what is so wrong with people wanting to speak spanish?

I don´t think they mean for you to speak Spanish in your own country, but when you travel, and not necessarily to a Spanish speaking country by speaking English and Spanish , the two most popular languages , it will be easier to get through to people. For instance in Morocco a lot of people speak Spanish due to the short distance between them and Spain.

I am hispanic and I have never told anyone to learn how to speak spanish. On the contrary I have alot of non spanish speaking people who ask me can I teach them spanish. I am not doubting what you are saying. Maybe they are thinking that it is good to learn 2 languages. I am bilingual and have excellent opportunities in the job market because of that. I would however not impose on anyone to learn Spanish, I do think that is rude. It is up to the person if they want to learn another language. However, I do think that if you live in America, you should learn the English language. It is necessary to learn the language in whose country you are in. That I don't think is rude. Anyone agree?

Well, if you think about it, you can go to most countries around the word, and you'll find people that speak English. When people come here from other countries, it's very rare to find someone to communicate with in their native language. Basically, Americans heads are shoved so far up their butts they think they don't have to learn about other people's cultures/languages. It's pretty sad.

How do u call a person who speaks 2 languages ??
Bilingual.
How do u call a person who speaks only one language ??

Chinese, Europeans and South Americans often speak 2 languages and I do not understand whay don´t we? Hispanics are the second economic force in this country and will be your key if u want to sell more in your business to hispanic people and make more money.

B/c America makes so many concessions for its non English speaking residents (i.e. The DMV's offering of its tests in various languages). However, if an American relocates to another country he or she will be expected to learn the official language of that country. Which is understandable. When in Rome do what the Romans do...
