If you are willing to pay for protection, check out Webroot SpySweeper, Sana Security SafeConnect, and the pro version of Zone Labs. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are both great free tools.

spyware is the menace of the 21st century,although not as destructive as viruses it can cause as much lost hours on your p.c
although sometimes critisized,free anti-spyware software is avalible from many websites and some of it is very good
spybot avalible from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html,is the best free anti-spy software avalible as it scans and cleans your p.c but also imunizes it from further attack using the internet explorer blocker which blocks bad sites while using internet explorer,this program is also compatible with the forthcoming windows vista operating system,as i have tried it on the beta version and it runs ok
lavasoft adaware(http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button)is a good program to run in conjunction with spybot as it cleans spy and adware,and is very good at stoping adware ,the cause of pop-ups
other good free anti-spyware programs are ewido anti-spyware(http://www.ewido.net/en/),spyware blaster(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html),and windows defender(http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
spyware blaster is paticually good if you are using mozzila firefox as a browser as is stops spyware within this browser,and windows defender is free from microsoft as long as you are using a genuine copy of windows xp.defender is also a part of the new operating system "vista"
my personal preference for spyware security,is a mixture of spybot,adaware,and windows defender,i have been using these programs for the last 2 years and apart from the odd tracking cookie i stay pretty well spyware free

so, pay the most for the best...And keep in mind if you have too many safegaurds in your system, they slow down your comp. drastically

I use spybot search and destroy and it is free...never had a problem....so far ha ha.
