Why can't you merge the two? You're creative. Be in health care and heal the whole person with 'art therapy'?
It's not duty if you're pained by the decision. You have more than one gift, use as many as possible. If not, then the only neglecting is not listening to your heart and recognizing your gifts.

Absolutely not! Why not combine both a "civic duty" AND your love of art? Perhaps you could paint a mural or do some work in the healthcare field as a recreation therapist! Many hospitals and long-term care facilities hire Recreation Therapists to help patients cope with their conditions by the use of art!!! It is especially recommended with the elderly and the children. You can either go to school and get a degree/certificate in Recreation Therapy or just plain volunteer while pursuing your dream. This way you are giving and receiving at the same time. I have seen some awesome changes that art brings about in patients that were withdrawn and anti-social, that's where your skills could be put to good use. You may even consider furthering your carreer by studies in Social sciences.
Good Luck to You and Be Well!

No, you're not. If a career in art is what will make you the happiest then go for it. It's not up to anyone esle to decide what you do with your life. And if you chose to go into healthcare when your heart is in art then not only will you chance being unhappy but your work will also suffer because you will not give it your all.

HELL NO!
OMG if everyone thought like that then we would not have all these wonderful collections! You must upon must follow what will make you most happy...I have a suspician that it will be your artistic abilities!
I think it is better to have tried at something even if it doesn't wok out, than spend your time wondering....'what if'. Live for today, regrets nothing and do what will make you the most perfectly happy :)

You will serve society and yourself best in doing what truly makes you happy. A passion for art is a honest living and nothing to regret. My best friend is an artist and now she does art therapy and loves it, but do what makes you happy it will be better in the end.

No, you aren't wrong. Get paid for doing what you love most. Whoever makes you feel guilty for it is a loser, so ignore them. :) I was going to go for nursing, too, but the program was wayyy to expensive, and I wasn't working at the time to afford it (even with a student loan). So, I'm going back for something else that pays well and will allow me to live comfortably. EverI'd rather do what I love than do what someone else wants me to do.

No I think you are doing your civic duty by pursuing your dream. Do what you love, love what you do. Plus the healthcare system is so corrupt.
