It's supposed to be gold, right? But how much, and what else? and how come it's dishwasher safe? There's something metallic in there for sure (the microwave doesn't lie)

(we got given some by an elderly neighbour)

Hi. Gilt edge is a small line of gold usually around the edge, Its done in gold leaf or gold liquid (a kind of paint). There is not enough gold to be valuable. but it is the crockery and the workmanship of the design that adds to the value.
Hope this helps.

The china has been gilded on the edge before firing. I have it on authority (from a famous porcelain maker) that it is real gold, as gold and platinum are the only metals that lend themselves to this process. Your microwave will dislike them because of the metal content.
Please do not put old gilt-edged crockery in the dishwasher. The gold may stand the strain a few times but, like my Royal Worcester dinner service which was made before the dishwasher was put into circulation and is now irreplaceable (they no longer make that design), it will progressively lose its gold and look very sad.
By the way, you are lucky to have such a generous neighbour.

The good stuff usually had gold as the gilding. If it's newer there might be some other metal that's just colored gold because gold can get expensive.

I'd not put it in the microwave at all.
