I own an 8 month old pit bull puppy, and let me tell you-- they're a lot of work. Don't get me wrong-- it's totally worth it IF you have the time and energy to devote to him.

Firstly, be sure to check with your new building's landlord. You'll probably want to let them know that you have a "mutt," as the word "pitbull" turns 90% of the world off.

Secondly, pits are extremely energetic and need lots of exercise. You can clearly tell when my guy hasn't had enough exercise; he gets restless and hyper and will do laps around my apartment. It's recommended that you take him for about three brisk, half-hour to hour speed walks/runs a day.

Thirdly, if you've never had a dog before, a pit might not be the right dog for you. They're stubborn and powerful, a combo that most first-time dog owners find intimidating.

There are plenty of GREAT pit bull reference websites out there, and most of them have sections called "So, you're thinking about getting a pit..." Check out the one posted below and give it some serious thought.

Rescue shelters across the country are FULL of pit bulls from owners who didn't think seriously enough about the reality of owning such a specific type of dog.

...all of that being said, Harry, my guy, is a total clown and an huge source of joy and entertainment in my life!

You really need to research this one. A lot of apartments don't allow dogs, and some community's don't allow pit bulls. There are two types of penalties. The one with the apartment building and the one with the law. If it is illegal to own a pit bull in that community you can be given a fine and have the dog removed from the area. Usually what they do when the remove the dog is put them down. Not a lot of community's who don't allow the pit bull will find it another home in one that will allow them. The apartment building will make you get rid of it if you are not aloud and might just go as far as evict you if their is any damage. You will more than likely lose any security deposit. They are a good dog, but in such a small home will need lots of exercise, like a good hour long walk every day and a trip to a local dog park if they are properly trained at a young age around other dogs.

Well if the apartment allows it. Most apartments only allow small breed dogs. Its possible but with a dog that size and that level of energy it would be hard. You would have to take the dog on multiple walks a day. Pits are very high energy dogs and get bored if they do not expel that energy. Maybe you could find a roommate and get a house together. That surely would be better for the dog.

While it is possible, it is not recommended. Most places don't allow animals. A pit bull is a rather large dog to be a house dog. You have to make sure he is walked, and given a run every day. They make lots of poop and urine. Get a cat, or wait till you buy a house with a yard, it's not fair to you or the dog. You will not be at home enough for a dog like that, and it will chew everything in sight when it gets bored.

I'd advise you not to. All dogs need exercise and you will need to be very vigilant about walking it and training it not to bark while you're gone.

In addition, you will need to find out the following:

Does the apartment allow dogs? If so, is there a weight limit? IS there an additional charge in the deposit or rent of you have a dog?
Does the city or county allow pit bulls? Does that breed need a special license?
Is there a vet nearby that you can take the dog to?

The short answer is yes you can.

The right answer is no you shouldn't. Its not fair to the dog for you to live in such a confined space. Now, if you're planning on sleeping in the apartment and then spending every free waking minute outside of the apartment with the dog, that might be ok.

Don't be a stupid and irresponsible owner. Get a BIGGER place or a smaller dog.

Despite if you can find someone willing to rent you an apartment under those conditions, you really need to think about THE DOG! How fair is it to keep him locked up in a small apartment?! Not very fair at all. Wait on getting a dog like that until you have a fenced yard to keep him in!
* a lot of apartments will not let you keep certain breed of dogs at all because of the risk to other renters*

It depends on the landlord. But the better question would be Why do you want to have a pitbull in a 1 bedroom apartment? Yikes! The dog will be chewing on its tail it'll be so stircrazy. Large dogs need space!

It depends on the apartment and their policies. Many apartments now are pet friendly. When you are calling around, ask what their pet policy is.

As long as the dog gets regular excercise outside, it should fine in a one bedroom apartment.

I live in a small three room apartment (kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom) and I have two half lab/pittbull mix dogs. They are brother and sister from the same litter. I also have a cat. All four of us are one big happy family in our tiny space. Outside is a few acres of a tree farm for walking them. Luckily my landlord allows me to keep them inside, not many do anymore. Some landlords will evict you when they find you have animals. I say go for it, good luck.
