I don't want to add RAM at this time but 98 hardly lets me run anything. I want to install an im program and cannot find one that will use 98. Also, can this be done for free?

You can't get an operating system for free...no matter how old is is....
Don't even attempt to get ME....it's so funky Microsoft no longer supports it!

Messengers in Yahoo and Aim and Msn are free and I use them in Windows 98.

I agree that XP would be your best bet. Windows ME is the worst OS ever. Windows 2000 is really good, but fairly slow to boot up and does not run as well on older hardware as XP does. Nothing is ever free.

you need to have the install cd NO its not free, but you can use a friends cd, but dont waste your time on ME or 2000 you need XP !

AIM, Yahoo messenger both work on W98
