NONE of the grocery store level foods are good for cats
BHT, BHA are preservatives used in some of these foods and have been linked to many probems which will show up later in life (kidney, liver, cancer etc)
by-products are fillers, beaks feet feathers... main thing bad here is they are preserved with a Chemical Pesticide known as Ethoxyquin.. banned for human use, it is linked to many health problems
corn - a cheap filler not easily digestable as a good protien source....*unlike dogs, cats are true carnivours.... they need a good MEAT source... corn isnt a good meat source
fillers mean a cat needs to eat more food and they are harder on the tummy - making smelly poop and causing vomitting.. also more filler = more poop...
grocery level foods also use FAT to give a glossy coat since most owners are easily tricked into thinking a glossy coat = a healthy pet... but the fat is hard on cats tummies...
anyhow I could go on and on about how bad grocery level food is.. not all pet supply store food is good - Science Diet for example is CRAP (they PAID for vet endorsement)
you should be aware vets receieve little or NO training on food ingredients and brands.. they promote what they are paid to promote....
you didnt say what country you are in - Argentina? Austria? Austraila??
in Canada NUTRAM is best, or ACANA, in USA, NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE is ok.. but FELIDAE or WELLNESS or INNOVA is better
yes these foods cost more - BUT your cat will eat less = poop less and have fewer health problems later in life...

Science Diet is the most expensive of the grocery store foods and just as bad as the rest of them. Read the label on the bag you buy the first three ingredients should be: meat protein (not by-products), brown rice and more meat protein.
Regular Science Diet: 30% protein. $2.04 per lb. Chicken by-products (heads, feet, entrails, feathers from chickens), brewer's rice (that's rice with all the bran, the nutritious part, leached out), corn gluten meal. What's good about that??????? All the other grocery store foods are the same, Iams, Purina, 9 Lives, Meow Mix etc.
Compare with Natural Balance, 34% protein. $1.66 per pound. chicken meal, brown rice (that's rice WITH the bran), duck, lamb meal. Other good brands are Solid Gold Katzen Flocken, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Eagle Pack, Innova, Eagle Pack, CA Natural (36% protein, $2.40 per lb.)
So if you pay less than $2.00 more a month you can have a really superior food for your cats.

Grocery stores don't usually carry higher end cat or dog food, the best you will be able to find is probably Purina Cat chow, I wouldn't recommend buying anything lower than that, most generic grocery store brands have a high ash content that can cause serious health problems later on.
I feed my cats IAMS, which is available at most large and small pet stores.

Depends on what the cat likes and will eat. My friend had a cat who finally died at 24 after eating regular purina all his life and thriving on it. He died of a car, not old age; he escaped the house and ran into the street. My kits eat Purina indoor cat. They hate the 'premium' catfoods, and eat this well, and seem healthy at ages 9, 6 and 2.

Cat's can be very fussy. Just because the brand is considered the best, you're cat may not eat it. I had a cat that woudl not touch anything but the cheapest stuff they had in the shop - I tried the leading brands and the expensive stuff but it walked away.
As long as the food has all the essential vitamins and stuff (they all do I guess) and your cat eats it and is keeping healthy then don't get sucked into brands.

IAMS is fantastic. yes, it is more expensive, but since cats get more nutrients out of it, they eat less of it, and it lasts longer than cheaper brands, so basically you end up paying the same ammount, and have healthier cats.
also, vets recomend giving your cat one tablespoon of wet cat food twice a day. the wet food helps them get nutrients they can't get otherwise, and also helps them not to become dehydrated.
NEVER get catfood with seafood in it. the mercury levels that all fish have nowadays wrecks havoc on your cats immune system. any good vet will tell you this.

science diet is said to be the best, but if its a little to expensive for you here are some other options. Look at the foods contents. If the first ingredient is a meat than its better for them than if it were rice or corn. That means the food is made mostly of meat, and not a filler. We dont really think of this but why give them a corn or rice based diet when they are not cows and we dont see them out grazing. I like Iams, its not as high cost and my pets love it. Of course not all foods are good for all animals. If you want you could probably call your vet and get their advice over the phone, I have before. (OLD ROY is the worst to feed any animal, its all fillers!)

I'd recommend Science Diet. A lot of the cheaper brands don't use natural ingredients and use fillers which are not particulary good for cats. I was feeding my cat cheaper food and she was shedding like crazy and gained a lot of weight. I switched to Science Diet and now she sheds a lot less, has lost the weight, and is now very happy and healthy. Food does make a big difference.

Thats your problem, the grocery store is not where you will find healthy cat food.
The best cat food is SCIENCE DIET.
Your cat will very seldom need a vetinarian, not to mention, you rarely have a litter box that stinks.
Excellent for their digestive system.
A ten pound bag cost about 18.99 at Pesmart or Petco, or any Pet Supply store.

IAMS is one of the ones my vets have recommended. It used to be available only at vet clinics. I have used it for my cats since the first one. Now we can buy it here at Safeway and Walmart and Zellers.
