get a preganancy test. Even the ones at the dollar store work pretty accurately.

42 is a bit early for menopause and by all means she can could be pregnant. She has a couple of options, she can take a pregnancy test, that will at least rule that, but I think at this age she should see a doctor. My mother-in-law went thru the same thing, she missed a couple of periods and saw the doctor and found a lump in her breast, the tests have come back inconclusive so far, but its worth getting checked out just to make sure everything is doing what it is supposed to be doing. :)

probably menopause... your period starts getting erratic, skipping, slowing down...
my mom started menopause around the same age and initially thought she was pregnant again. Not at all, at your mother's age it COULD be either, but the symptoms are similar.
She should go see her OB/GYN asap. If she is pregnant, she'll want to know. If she isn't, there are hormone therapies and other things she can do to alleviate some of the issues of menopause, like hot flashes and calcium deficiencies.

It is very possible that it is menopause. She is certainly at the age where it could begin. I've heard of it starting as early as 35. She should go have herself checked out...she'll find out!
As for the girl who asked about your mom being 42 and still having sex!!! She must be a kid! I'm 29 and I think 42 is still young! Your moms got a whole life ahead of her. Just tell her to protect herself when having sex!! It's crazy out ther!

symptoms of menopause. These are night sweats, flushes, flashes, vaginal dryness, memory loss. As you approach menopause (around 50 years of age) you will start to miss a period occasionally. Then you will miss two periods, then several. When you miss a full 12 months, we look back at the date of your final period and say that is when you reached menopause. If you have any doubts, take a pregnancy test seven days AFTER you miss your next period and you will know for sure.

Low estrogen levels are linked to some uncomfortable symptoms in many women. The most common and easy to recognize symptom is hot flashes ÷ sudden intense waves of heat and sweating. Some women find that these hot flashes disrupt their sleep, and others report mood changes. Other symptoms may include irregular periods, vaginal or urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence (leakage of urine or inability to control urine flow), and inflammation of the vagina. Because of the changes in the urinary tract and vagina, some women may have discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse. Many women also notice changes in their skin, digestive tract, and hair during menopause.
Menopause is the medical term for the end of a woman's menstrual periods. It is a natural part of aging, and occurs when the ovaries stop making hormones called estrogens. This causes estrogen levels to drop, and leads to the end of monthly menstual periods. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 60, but it can happen earlier. Menopause can also occur when the ovaries are surgically removed or stop functioning for any other reason.

If it was her last viable egg that was fertilized, it can be a combination of both! If she starts having wild or violent mood swings and starts growing a mustache or beard, it's a safe bet that menopause os throwing her hormones out of whack. If her breasts leak, her belly swells, and you can feel something kicking, she's pretty far along on a pregnancy. Women have gone menopausal in their 20's, and others gave birth in their 60's.

she is still a little young for menopause, i have an aunt that had her last child at age 42 or 43, my mom just went through menopause at age 49 and she said she was young to be going through it already. so i would say that there is a really good chance that your mom could be pregnant

It could be either.
Women might skip periods before they actually enter menopause.
However she could very well be pregnant.

Eric G cracks me up.... "last viable egg" Do you realize a woman has more eggs than she will ever use? It's not the release of the last egg that puts a woman into menopause. But it was funny.
