I've caught my cat eating lettuce from my salad more then once now. He really seems to like lettuce which is so funny but is it safe? I would think so.

I was thinking that too about the E-coli. I would think if I eat it first and I am fine that he would be fine. But maybe a little cat would have a lower tolerence for it but at the same time isn't there e-coli in there fecies? They lick there butts and they are ok.

Well I sorta wanted him to learn to eat things like lettuce or peas. He also likes peas which I read are good for cats too. The reason why is my older cat is a little over weight and will not eat peas or lettuce and I hear peas anyway are helpful to mix into there food to help them lose weight.

Someone mentioned iceburg lettuce having no nutrition. I don't eat that either because of the. I only eat dark green lettuce. So that is all my cat would get. I guess basically though the reason I ask is in case he eats some lettuce from my salad I wanted to make sure that it wasn't poison for them.

Garlic, onions, chocolate, raw potatoes and a few others things I do know are poison to cats.

Oh and one more thing I wanted to mention is cats do not need grass or things like that really. They live on protein and that is very important for them. My vet said if they have a problem going to the bathroom to give them powder fiber that you can buy at any drug store or grocery store and mix it into there wet food. I do that with my big cat since she has a hard time going to the bathroom sometimes. It also makes there stools larger and easier to pass and keeps there anal glands from getting clogged. I had to have my older cats anal glands expressed a few times and now that I give her fiber they are staying clear on there own.

My cat eats grass its a form of chlorophyll it helps them when they feel ill.If you live where there is no grass for your cat. Your cat would probably enjoy some lettuce for the chlorophll. You can always buy pet grass at a pet store if you like.

Not at all, the contents are akin to grass. Most parts of common store-bought lettuce are iceberg lettuce, which are actually mostly water! Keep in mind that your cats will prefer to consume meat, as they are by nature carnivores. Don't try to make your cat a vegan anytime soon. :) And yes, there are plenty of studies have been done trying to link a domestic animal's grass eating (which would include the consumption of lettuce) with an illness, a deficiency in diet, or any sort of lack of fibrous materials. But all have failed to find any strong correlation to any particular problem.

An e-coli infection isn't going to show up in you in the twenty minutes if takes to eat your salad. Iceberg lettuce doesnt even have any nutritional value for humans, kinda like celerry - just lots of moisture. I am not sure if the dressing is OK for cats and there probably isn't enough of that to do harm. He might like the taste of it though.

I also had a cat years ago that had an affinity for lettuce. It's not bad for them as far as I know. But it sure is funny to watch them eat it :)

Don't know about lettuce b/c my cats have never been interested in it. I do know when I used to let them outside they ate grass but some grass is not good for them. One of my cats once got a piece of grass with prickly edges caught in her throat.

I now grow herbs for my cats from the seeds sold in pet stores. The brand I buy is cosmic kitty herbs. If your cat is an indoor cat, he might like it. Some of my cats like it better than others.

My cat too steals lettuce from my salad, so now I give her a little everytime I have some. It is safe for them to have from time to time.

ok, first things first. you should not be feeding your cat anything besides cat food. but i am also a pet owner (dogs) and i know sometimes it is hard looking into their eyes and not given in, and also the fact that cats (mostly) get into everything and try everything out. i know that for dogs, dogs eat lettucve and grass when they need to go to the bathroom and they just can not. just make sure the lettuce you have around for him/her to get her/his face on it, its clean.
