my mom dyes her hair a redish blonde, and the last time she did it, she had a severe headache in the middle of the night (roughly 8-10 hours after she dyed it). she said it started on the very top of her head and kind of generated out. it was so bad, she woke up and had to have a shower and clean her hair to make it stop. im just wondering wat happened.

Can Dyeing Hair Harm and cause Headaches?

The short answer is yes. In the same way that inhaling car exhaust, smoke from a fire, or fumes from cleansers can cause headaches or dizziness, exposure to the strong chemicals found in hair dye can make you feel a little "weak in the knees." You may have experienced what's called an irritative reaction, which results from inhaling something in high concentrations for extended periods of time. Irritative reactions last only a few hours to one day, but if you feel sick for more than 24 hours or begin to vomit, call your doctor.

It's common for people to have no negative reaction when exposed to an irritant in small doses, but when exposed to large doses, they will cough, sneeze, feel dizzy, or experience itching or burning in the lungs and throughout the nose and throat. And just as dyes can produce these symptoms, so can perms, relaxers, and any other cosmetic agents that you inhale.

Sitting in a salon without proper ventilation may have caused your light-headedness. If you plan to keep coloring your hair, try visiting the salon early in the morning before high concentrations of chemicals build up, or use dye at home where you can open a window or go outside.

Your itching scalp could also be caused by a true allergy, where the immune system identifies a substance as foreign and produces antibodies to fight it. Antibodies will attack tissues where the substance is detected, leading -- in the case of skin -- to itching, swelling, or rashes.

Some types of allergies can affect breathing or digestion. Skin allergies, however, tend to be less serious because they affect only the area where the skin and the substance come into contact. Most skin reactions are minor and disappear after a day or so. But if your itching persists or any rashes continue to spread after 24 hours, see a doctor for further treatment.

To prevent future reactions, find out what products your hair stylist used. Be sure to get a list of the ingredients and, if possible, a sample of the mixture. To identify your allergies, your doctor may perform a patch skin test, where a suspected allergen (substance that causes a reaction) is placed on a small area of skin and secured with a bandage for 48 hours. When the time is up, the doctor removes the bandage and looks for changes such as itching, rashes, or blotchy skin.

The choice to continue using hair dye depends on the severity of your case and whether you can find products that are non-irritating. If you're concerned about what decision is best for you, talk to your doctor.

I SAY YES YES YES!!!!! My co worker just went through this with a perm and then color. If you ask me any 'chemical' can cause harm. My co worker ended up in the hospital with a major migraine. So continue researching but your mom knows her body....and if it didn't happen prior to the dye....it is the dye. Just an opinion...I'm not a doctor.

I get the same thing. It's probably just the strong smell. If you did it in a confined space, like a bathroom, the fumes could have gotten to you. Take an aspirin, get some fresh air, and see if it goes away. Allergy tests are usually for skin sensitiviy anyway.

It can happen if you do to many processes at once and also if you have alot of hair and you had it up in a cap with product for a bit that may do it as well. some products can cause irritation of the scalp as well...this is so vague,so i hope i was a little bit of help~

I don't think it was the dye, stress can do that to you though.
