short wave radio picks up short wave broadcast instead of (or in addition to) FM and/or AM broadcast... Short wave travels a lot further than AM/FM so with a short wave radio you'll be able to listen to (short wave, not FM/AM) stations from around the world

you can buy them at most electronics stores for about $20 or so

Short waves refers to a set of frequencies above the AM broadcast band and below the FM broadcast band (very loose definition). They are popular for very long range reception. Try your local Radio Shack for a receiver.

Caution: if you get hooked on this stuff, it can be expensive.
