Wax paper should not go in the oven. The oven burns up the wax causing the smoke.
Wax paper is usually used for pouring sticky foods like candies on.
Parchment is not the same, it is not coated with wax and can be used safely in the oven.

Oh Brother! Ok here ya go, Wax paper is Old History before we had Plastic wrap and Tupper Ware, some of you probably think Tupper Ware came with Adam and Eve, NOT! Wax paper had many uses back in the days, now? line the bottom of the bird cage. Parchment paper is a SILICONE based paper for cooking and will not stick and can be reused. Does the bird look bored? Better go back to lining the bottom with newspaper.

They are not the same. Parchment paper is infused with oils. Wax paper is coated with wax. Wax paper is a decent wrap for meat as it is somewhat moisture resistant. Parchment paper is better for baking.

yes they are the same. some recipes call for wax paper to reduce the food from sticking to the pan, usually baked goods, it does make the smokey smell, but i dont think it is any problem, i dont know why it does that.
