A friend of mine works in the obit. dept at our local newspaper. She says it's so people from their past will recognize them and can send their condolences. Their current friends know what they looked like.

each person has a self identity that stems from youth and does not feel that the old person they see in the morrior is really what they are. you will understand it some day . the old people doing the obits understand this too. it is the way they want to be remembered by their friends and family and the world. not as the decayed hollow ill person they became before they died.

Some people die from such horrible diseases that you really don't want the world to remember them like that. So why not show them in the prime of their youth?
I know my aunt wouldn't have wanted a recent photo in her obit.

Ghosts do not show up in photos. Well, it sounded good to me.
It may be to show that they were an attractive person in their youth. Heck, I remember looking at an old photo of my Mom and her sisters, she 79 now. I told her; "Dang, mom, ya'll were some Hotties back in your day"! It made her feel good.

Because someone reading the obits may not have seen that person since they were younger and it would be quicker to spot them.

I told my family to do this if I die before everyone else. I want a photo of me when I was in my prime. I want it that way.

I have asked myself that-over and over. Maybe the deceased never had a later portrait taken, and snapshots do not show up well.

I guess to show them at their peak physicaly, dont know why, but i would rather be remembered as i was at my best, than when i was old and infirm.
