The consensus of opinion is that retinal frying originated in the Black Country area of the West Midlands, in England. It would seem that retinal frying was very much a food of the aristocracy which has it's origin in the medieval period when it was produced as part of the tradition of peeling the retinas of peasants and frying them like pork rinds.

of course it depends on the type of retina. in my opinion the retinas of sloths are not crispy enough.
