Because sometimes people have bad days. Or they just decide they are no longer going to use good manners. Who knows.

I ALWAYS say please and thank you to my server. Back in high school I was a hostess and I know how hard everyone in a restaurant works.

I always say please and thank-you when having a meal, but why do head waiters hang on until you have just placed something in your mouth before sneaking up on you and asking, "Is everything all right sir?" Good or bad all you can do is nod and make some sort of noise. I want the opportunity to make a comment about the food and or service without mumbling past my food ..................

I think its because so many people now don't have any manners - and forget that you are still doing them a service when they come to the restaurant. They are so wrapped up in their own little thing that they forget common, basic courtesy!
It means that when somebody does say please and thankyou you actually notice it because it is so rare these days. Sigh.....

Remember the old saying familiarity breeds contempt ?.
That's exactly what it is.
People should always practice good manners, no matter how many times they have been to a place.

Do they? Must be my age but I always say please and thank you regardless of how many times I have visited a particular restaurant.

It usually starts at home. good manners are taught, what is instilled in them when they grow older depends on how much they have learned. saying please & thank you, seems to be taken for granted anymore.

Errr, I've never noticed this - being a regular at several restaurants, I always say please and thank you, but then I say please and thank you to anyone and everyone.

They probably didn't say please or thank you in the first place, it just becomes more noticeable if you recognise them!!
