I read in my nursing book that an obgyn nurse was held liable (of course she would have) pushing a baby back in the woman's vagina, as the baby was being born (the woman delievered at term). Why would anyone do this? I'm thinking, maybe the doctor wasn't there and she wanted to prolong the birth?

anyway, the baby did not die but sustained horrific brain injuries.

The nurse obviously paniced and didn't know what she was doing. I'm sure she couldn't have been thinking straight and you are probably right that she wanted to wait until the doctor showed up.

I have no answer to that question and can't even begin to comprehend it. Normal people, taxi driver's, police officers, deliver babies every day in an emergency situation. She was better qualified than any of these, so I can't imagine what possessed this nurse to do such a terrible thing. Maybe that is the key word right there, possessed!

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. A nurse can deliver a baby. Are you sure that's not an urban legend?

She has all the proper training. A doctor is not needed. She should know the ramifications....That sounds completely implausible to me. And you're telling me that the mother just laid there and took it...oh please...

You'd have to be pretty damn high to be that fn stupid.

I have heard of this being done when they determine the shoulders are not going to fit, so they push the baby back and do a C-section, but not a nurse just doing it herself.

I wonder how many informational pieces reach the laity, relative to what happens to nurses when the doctor comes in late and the baby has been delivered??

One reason I know of: Sometimes the baby gets the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck. The only way to remove it is to push the baby back in. May be other reasons as well.
