I agree with the three dental professionals who answered before me.
The "line of black" may be the metal at the edge of the crown. If your gum recedes even a tiny little bit, the metal that was originally hidden under the gum will start to show. That's my guess, anyway. §

Simple.....you say the tooth is a artificial crown. Therefore, the answer is the mental in the base of the crown is whats showing. If it wasn't like this before, then you have been suffering from gum recession or diseased gums caused by not flossing everyday or by continually grinding your teeth in a stressful situation. If the tooth is in the front, you would probably ask your dentist to redo the crown in ceramic material rather than porcelain over metal. If the tooth is in the back, well then, don't worry about it; no one can see it. Just go get you bi annual check up and don't forget to floss, floss, floss and/ or try a bite guard for the grinding.
Good Luck!

It may not be decay!!!!
Sounds like you have a PFM crown. This is poreclain fused to metal. I am a certified dental assistant and it is most likely just the minute metal portion showing from the crown. This is not rare and can be fixed easily to be more asthetically pleasing.

It is probably one of two things
1. either u have a tartar residue accumulating around your tooth, this will require abrasive cleaning by a dentist
2. the tooth is showing the first signs of decay, this will need either filling or removal depending on how deep into the tooth the decay has reached.
In either case a visit to th dentist's is a must

I'm not quite sure how a crown works but i'm scheduled to have a crown fitted before or after my braces are done along with veneers and bridges I think. I'm the poster child for freaky teeth. I look like someone ran a saw randomly in my mouth.
An educated guess is that the crown wasn't properly done, soem food or plaques has gotten in. please brush properly, even if it hurts, just brush normally. focus on what is more important.
i agree with everyone else here. a dentist is a must.

decay- the last thing I would do is ask on here- I would be in the dentists chair ASAP. The first thing people notice is your smile- i.e. teeth!!
